Start With Your Laptop?s Measurements
By Modexa
Learn how to measure your laptop and compare sleeve dimensions for a comfortable fit, including devices with attached protective cases.

Measure before you choose a sleeve
Buying a laptop sleeve should be simple. But choosing one based only on a “13-inch” or “15-inch” label can leave you with a sleeve that is too tight, too loose, or difficult to close. The best starting point is your laptop’s actual measurements.
Screen Size Is Only Part of the Picture
A laptop’s advertised screen size measures the screen diagonally. It does not describe the width, depth, or thickness of the complete device. Two laptops with the same screen size can have different dimensions because of their screen borders, body design, and construction. A sleeve that fits one model comfortably may not fit another. Treat the size label as a starting point, then check the measurements.
How to Measure Your Laptop
Close your laptop and place it on a flat surface. Using a ruler or measuring tape, record three measurements: Width: Measure across the laptop from its left edge to its right edge. Depth: Measure from the front edge to the back edge. Thickness: Measure the closed laptop at its thickest point, including any feet or protruding parts. Write down the measurements in the same units used by the sleeve’s product listing. You can also find dimensions in the manufacturer’s specifications. Check the exact model and generation—different versions of the same laptop can have different dimensions.
Compare With the Sleeve’s Internal Dimensions
When browsing sleeves, look for internal dimensions. These describe the space available for your laptop. External dimensions describe the outside of the sleeve, including its padding and seams. A sleeve can appear large enough from the outside while offering less room inside. For example, a laptop measuring 30.5 × 21.5 × 1.6 cm needs usable internal space that accommodates all three measurements. If a listing only gives external dimensions, ask the seller to confirm the fit before ordering. There is no single clearance that works for every sleeve. Stretch, padding, shape, and the closure all affect how it fits.
Include Any Case You Keep Attached
If your laptop has a hard shell or protective cover that stays on during travel, measure it with that cover attached. Even a thin case adds to the device’s dimensions. Accessories such as attached stands can also affect the fit, particularly in slim sleeves. Measure the laptop as you intend to carry it.
What Should the Right Fit Feel Like?
Your laptop should slide into the sleeve without needing to be pushed or forced. The zipper or other closure should fasten comfortably, without straining around the corners. A very loose sleeve may allow the laptop to move around inside. An overly tight sleeve can be inconvenient and may put pressure on the device or closure. Follow any model-specific compatibility information in the product listing, alongside the measurements.
A Quick Check Before You Order
Before adding a sleeve to your cart, confirm: Your laptop’s exact model and dimensions. Whether the listed sleeve dimensions are internal or external. Whether an attached case changes the fit. Any compatibility notes and the seller’s return policy. A few minutes spent measuring can help you choose a sleeve with confidence.
