How to Clean Your Laptop: Screen, Keyboard and Everyday Care
By Modexa
Build a simple laptop-care routine: check the manufacturer instructions, prepare a suitable cloth and treat the screen, keyboard and accessories separately.

Care instructions depend on the exact laptop model and surface. Check the manufacturer guidance before cleaning.
Find the instructions for your exact laptop
Fingerprints and dust can make a laptop look ready for a quick wipe, but the right method depends on its materials and display. Find the manufacturer's cleaning instructions using the exact model name. Read any separate guidance for a coated display or removable accessory. Do not assume a cleaner suitable for a desk, phone case or another computer is also suitable for your laptop screen.
Prepare before you wipe
For the Apple products covered by its general guidance, Apple advises disconnecting power sources, devices and cables and using a soft, lint-free cloth. Follow the shutdown and preparation instructions for your own computer. Clear a stable place to work and inspect the cloth for grit before bringing it near the screen. If a mark remains, check the permitted method rather than scrubbing harder or trying a household cleaner.
Treat the screen as its own surface
A display may need a different method from the outer case. Apple's notebook guidance specifies a water-dampened soft, lint-free cloth for the screen and says not to spray liquid directly onto it. That advice should not be treated as permission to use the same method on every manufacturer's display. Follow the instructions for yours, including any exceptions for special coatings, and keep moisture away from openings.
Check the keyboard and outer case separately
Read the approved instructions for these surfaces before using any liquid or wipe. A cleaning product permitted on one part of a computer may be unsuitable on another. Do not pour cleaner between keys or improvise a deep-cleaning method for sticky switches. If a spill or a key problem needs more than surface cleaning, contact the manufacturer or a repair provider with the model and a description of what happened.
Give accessories their own care routine
Remove a laptop sleeve or removable cover and check its care label separately. A textile sleeve, printed design and accessory containing electronics may all require different treatment. Do not assume that an item is machine washable or waterproof from its appearance. Keep a clean storage space for the laptop and avoid placing loose plugs or other hard objects against its surface when packing your bag.
Make the next clean easier
Store a suitable cloth where it will stay clean, and put drinks where an accidental spill is less likely to reach the computer. Before packing away, check the laptop and carrying sleeve for loose objects or visible dirt. If you are choosing a refurbished laptop, read the condition notes and inspect it when it arrives. Cleaning helps with everyday surface marks; it does not remove scratches or change the condition described in a listing.
