What to check before buying a refurbished laptop in Canada
By Modexa
A practical checklist for refurbished laptop buyers: condition, battery, specifications, software, accessories and return terms.
Start with the tasks you need it for
Write down your everyday uses before comparing listings. Browsing, video calls and documents have different demands from gaming, video editing or engineering software. Check the published requirements for the software you use, including its supported operating systems. Choose a laptop around those needs rather than an attractive model name alone.
Check the exact specifications
Look for the full processor model, installed memory, storage type and capacity, screen resolution and available ports. A processor family name alone does not identify its age or performance. If a listing offers several configurations, confirm which one is selected. Do not assume memory or storage can be upgraded without checking the model.
Understand the condition description
Refurbished products can vary in cosmetic wear and preparation. Read the seller’s condition notes and inspect available photos for marks, cracks or worn keys. Ask what was tested and whether the photos show the actual unit. A condition grade is useful only when the seller explains what that grade means.
Ask about battery condition
A used battery may have less capacity than when it was new. Ask whether a battery health measurement is available, how it was obtained and whether replacement is possible. Do not assume a battery is new unless the listing says so. Runtime also depends on brightness, applications and power settings, so a single estimate cannot describe every use.
Confirm software support and setup
Check the installed operating system and whether the manufacturer supports it on that exact model. Review current support information from the software vendor before buying. Ask whether the device is ready for a new owner, free of previous account locks and supplied with any required software licence. Avoid relying on vague wording such as “latest software”.
Check accessories and connections
Confirm whether the charger is included and suitable for the laptop. Make a list of connections you need, such as USB, a monitor output or a headphone socket. Ask about the webcam, microphone, Wi-Fi, keyboard and touchpad if the listing does not cover their condition. An adapter may be necessary for your existing accessories.
Read the complete purchase terms
Review the listed currency, shipping costs, applicable taxes, warranty details and return terms before checkout. Ask whether any warranty covers the battery and what the claim process requires. Custom products and refurbished electronics may have different policies, so read the terms for the item you are buying.
Test when the laptop arrives
Check that the received model and specifications match your order. Inspect the condition, then test charging, the display, keyboard, touchpad, webcam, sound and the connections you use. Keep your order details and contact the store promptly if you find a problem, following its return instructions. Never ship a return to an unconfirmed address.
